How You Respond to the Holy Ghost Will Determine Your Future
Sy Underwood

The church at Ephesus had a small beginning with Paul finding the church with only twelve believers in the city.  They
had been won to the Lord by an evangelist named Apollos.  However, they had been misinformed about the presence
of the Holy Ghost and seemed to lack a consciousness of the spirit in the life of the believer.  So Paul began his
mission by having to get the foundation laid properly.  After about three months of preaching and teaching truth, the
Jews hardened their hearts and refused to hear the gospel and began to murmur against the message.  So Paul
moved the church into a school house and there he preached for about two years.  We will always have some who will
not hear the truth.  Their response can range from critical to total unbelief.  As Paul found out people's refusal to hear
truth can cause a hardness of heart and a refusal to hear the truth that would set one free.

    19. “And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world and men loved darkness rather than
light, because their deeds were evil.
    20. For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed.
    21. But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done
    in God.” John 3: 19-21

    35. Then Jesus said to them, A little while longer the light is with you. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness
overtake you, he who walks in darkness does not know where he is going.
    36. While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.”  John 12:35 – 36
    12. Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, I am the light of the world, He who follows Me shall not walk in
darkness, but have the light of life.”  John 8:12

    12. “For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the Lord shall arise
upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee.”  Isaiah 60:2

We can clearly see from these verses how it is that some respond to light in a wrong way.  They respond negatively
because truth convicts us of the wrongness of our ways.  Light exposes that which is hidden.  And so it is very
important how we respond to the dealings of the Holy Ghost.  It will determine our very future if we refuse the truth.  It
will send one on a path and a destiny of much trouble and trials.  It’s not that God doesn’t love us but rather because
He loves us that correction of direction comes.  Jesus said, “He who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds
may be seen clearly.”
In the following passage, John 12:35-36, we read the writings of Jesus again and he talks about light.  He says to us
that we should walk in the light or respond to the dealings of truth positively while the light is with you because
deception will come, darkness will come and you’re not going to be able to see clearly as when the light is fully showing
the way.

    35.  Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you.  Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness
come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth.
    36.  While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light.  These things spake Jesus, and
departed, and did hide himself from them.

You see if we want the light of life we must respond to the Holy Ghost dealings and yield ourselves to His direction and
correction.
When the church finds itself surrounded by gross darkness she will then begin to seek the light. This is talking about
darkness so thick that it can be felt, this will cause many to be turned back to the truth that will set them free.   Only in
utter desperation will some begin to seek a message of truth and light.  Yet for those who know the truth and know who
they are in Christ Jesus, it is their portion [opportunity] to arise and shine and declare the works of our God as He
builds the Kingdom of God.
Have you ever considered just how amazing it is what God can do when we let go and believe He is able?  I’m telling
you it is truly awesome to yield things over to God and watch Him go to work.  Christianity is meant to be fun and
exciting and it is when God gets in the middle of it.  When God moves in, it’s fun just to watch what He is going to do
next. I’ve been privileged to experience and to see the Holy Ghost at work in the lives of many churches over the years
where we have ministered.  But I have also seen how hard it is when unbelief and then a critical spirit comes in and
people to respond to unbelief and the lies of Satan.
I am more convinced than ever that there is more about God that we don’t know than I ever thought possible.  All things
are possible with God.  And God’s word tells us He wants us to be a part of what He is doing.  He says, “I can do all
things through Christ who gives me strength.”  Some of us need some strength to believe that God is God and that
God wants to do something through you.  If some of you will just step out on faith and trust God He will work in your
lives more than you ever dreamed He would or could.
Folks I came by today to tell you that God is raising up people everywhere who are radically in love with Jesus and are
responding to His presence and the possibility that nothing is impossible for our God.  Many of those we come in
contact with know that, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of
lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.”  God said, “I know the plans I have for you, declares
the Lord, plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."  Jeremiah 29:11.
The key here is that God Knows.  He is the Father of lights which as used here in this text could be revelation of a
place that will be illuminated in time.  In time God shows all things for what the truth is and what His will is about.
Verse 11 says, “In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of Him who
works all things according to the council of His will, that we who first trusted in Christ should be to the praise of His
glory.” God has given us an inheritance that we should exist to be all that He has called us to be and to do because we
are His inheritance.  We are given the glorious privilege of being and of living and existing forever as God’ most
cherished possession and heritage.  The problem is we don’t believe it.  I’m telling you how you respond to the Holy
Ghost will determine your future.  Yes it will!  We are to exist to the praise of His Glory.  We will live forever in the new
heavens and earth as the perfect demonstration of His Glory.  All shall stand in stark amazement at Gods spectacular
glory—the glory of His eternal grace and love that was shown to you and to me.  I’m telling us right here and now we
need to get a revelation of who we are in Christ Jesus and act like it, talk like it and be it.  Understand we are sons of
the most high God.   Eph. 2:19-21

Develop a Mentality of Being Teachable
I have watched with great reserve and overwhelming compassion of love for the precious people of God who are
satisfied with a “just as I am” mentality which means they are fearful to step over the threshold of the norm and into a
greater place of intimacy than they have ever experienced.  But I tell you the key here is to develop a mentality of
being teachable.  Don’t be afraid of the impossible.  Embrace it and see the God of the impossible show up.
Prov. 14: 6 AMP says: “A scoffer seeks wisdom in vain [for his very attitude blinds and deafens him to it] but knowledge
is easy to him who [being teachable] understands.”   Don’t be afraid of what you don’t understand.  If it is God it will
prove out in the end.
Many are fearful to learn and then become critical of that they have not experienced or know anything about.  How you
respond will determine your future.  Many in the church today are stuck in an old season of time of trying to make
things happen like it used to instead of listening to the spirit and just obeying His direction.

How you listen
Jesus said “For nothing is secret that will not be revealed, nor anything hidden that will not be known and come to
light.  Therefore take heed how you hear.  For whoever has, to him more will be given, and to whoever does not have,
even what he seems to have will be taken from him.”  My future really depends on my response, not my reaction.
I am convinced that God is about to take His church to the next level of His Glory.  That is why we must believe and
trust in His ability to take us where we have never been.  God says, “I will glorify the house of my glory” Isaiah 60:7.
First of all what is the glory of God?  The glory is Him and is the evidence that He is present.  The next level of Glory
however brings with it an ease to get things accomplished that we have struggled with for years.  God wants to
increase the measure of His glory on His house.  And we are His House, His body.  And God has sealed us with the
Holy Spirit as an earnest or pledge to the believer that we are the redeemed of God.  We are God’s cherished
possession by the fact that the Holy Spirit live within us.

    24. “Take heed what you hear. With the same measure you use, it will be measured to you; and to you who
    hear, more will be given.
    25. For whoever has, to him more will be given; but whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away
    from him.”  Mark 4:24-25

What Jesus was speaking of here was the glory of God in our lives, that is the manifest presence of Christ on our
lives.  Jesus measures out his glorious presence in various amounts, whether churches or individuals.  God pledges
“More shall be given to you.” God always desires to pour out more of his glory on his people.  He longs to do for us
exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think. Why is this?
You and I are being given the opportunity to have access to all He has done, give and will inherit.  “Most assuredly, I
say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because
I go to My Father” John 14:12. Yet we must ask for what purpose?  Jesus does what a king does; what any King would
do.  He wants us to represent Him and carry His glory to the ends of the earth. Proclaiming His Kingdom has no end.
Moses said, “Show me your glory.”  In Gods glory He speaks. He puts us in the place next to Him and He passes by,
imparting Himself to us.  We then become glory carrriers.  We carry what He has entrusted us to carry.  Whatever we
do we do as unto the Lord.  We are in Him and He is in us,
